Ghost Gauge for iPhone and iPad
Last updated 30 September 2026
Ghost Gauge has no account, no server of its own and no analytics. Your readings, rides and locations stay on your device and are never sent to us. The only thing the app fetches from the internet is the list of firmware updates for your gauge, and the updates themselves.
What the app handles
Readings from your gauge
Whatever your car reports to the Ghost Gauge or Ghost Gauge Nano: typically coolant and intake air temperature, boost on a turbocharged engine, battery voltage, engine speed and road speed. They arrive over Bluetooth, are shown on screen and, while ride logging is on, are written to a file on your device.
Ride logs
While ride logging is on and the engine is running, the app writes one sample a second to a file in its own storage — about 94 KB an hour. The most recent 50 rides are kept and older ones are removed automatically. You can delete any ride from the ride list.
Location
Map each ride (Settings › This iPhone, or This iPad) is on unless you turn it off. While it is on, the app records your location alongside each ride sample so the ride can be drawn on a map. This happens only while a ride is being recorded — including with your phone locked in your pocket, which is why the app asks to use location in the background — and it pauses while the engine is off. Positions are written into the same ride file on your device and are never transmitted. Turn the switch off, or deny location permission, and the rest of the app works without it.
Camera and Photos
Only when you share a ride: the camera is used if you choose to take a photo with the ride's sticker on it, and a photo is read only if you pick one. A picture or sticker you save is added to your library; the app asks only for permission to add, not to read your library. Nothing is uploaded — sharing goes through the iOS share sheet, to whatever you choose.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is used to find and talk to your gauge, and to stay connected in the background so alarms still reach you with the phone locked. The app scans only for the Ghost Gauge service and does not connect to other devices.
Firmware updates and the internet
Now and then the app checks kmhndi.github.io/ghost-gauge-app for new firmware for
your gauge and downloads it. These are plain file downloads from GitHub Pages: the app sends no
identifier, readings or location with them, though like any web request they reach GitHub from your
IP address. Turning off Download firmware updates in Settings › This iPhone
stops the automatic downloads; the app still checks the list while a gauge is connected.
Local network
To install an update, the app joins the gauge's own temporary Wi-Fi network and sends the firmware file to it directly. That network provides no internet connection, and nothing is uploaded anywhere else.
Notifications and Live Activities
Alarm notifications and the Lock Screen reading are produced on your device from readings your gauge sent. No push server is involved.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect, receive, store, sell or share any of your data. The developer has no access to your readings, ride logs or location. There is no tracking, no advertising identifier and no third-party SDK in the app. If you have chosen in iOS Settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may pass on crash reports; those contain no readings, rides or locations.
Deleting your data
Delete individual rides from the ride list in the app, or delete the app from your device to remove everything it stored, including all ride files and settings.
Children
Ghost Gauge is a tool for a vehicle accessory and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone.
